Long ago I remember being in the mountains, sitting in the snow, bundled up, sitting with the elk near, within the Pine an elder. Soon I heard a clear whisper. An invitation. I said ok and yes. This was not the first invitation nor the last. I do not take it for granted or expect it. Every single time this happens I change. Soften. My heart and whole being fill with deep appreciation. I remember, again and again, we live among Nature allies everyday. I trust them.
Today, thick carpets of green chickweed leaves with tiny clusters of heart-star flowers grow abundant among the horse herb layers on this full moon of December. Wintering weeds nourish the earth's soil. I am thrilled they grow here. Its their first season of carpets. Last year critters had brought straggly starts of growth in various spots - full shade to part to full sun. Even with long days of 110 summer temps they did not crush. Instead they kept low, grew slow underneath in the the soil. What was a few tiny sprigs are now thick carpets.
When a deep freeze arrives the green will freeze off, too. The good news is they will return soon after. Until that deep freeze I enjoy their devic presence and at times a nibble. In the spring they will return. Maybe we will create something together. We'll see. We're long time friends. I trust their share and always listen.
